If you’re a seasoned UAE-based AI professional, congratulations: you’re in demand. Why? Recent research points to an AI skills gap in the country, placing your skills in high demand.
That’s good news today, but there’s also reason for caution. A skills gap brings challenges that could impact your career in the medium and long term. Read on as we spotlight those challenges and propose action you can take to overcome them.
What does the research tell us?
According to Coursera’s 2026 Global Skills Report, the UAE ranks sixth globally for AI readiness. The report’s AI-Human Skills Synergy Index judges readiness based on a workforce’s development of AI and related human skills, plus the status of each country’s own AI environment.
This sixth-place ranking underlines what we already knew: the UAE’s drive for broad AI integration is accelerating, fuelled by favourable infrastructure and a government that leads by example. However, more data points to the underlying challenge: upskilling isn’t happening fast enough to meet demand.
Manpower Group’s 2026 Global Talent Shortage Survey, which studied 41 countries including the UAE, found that 76% of businesses in the country have struggled to fill roles generally. And, for the first time, AI skills have become the hardest to recruit, surpassing engineering and traditional IT.
AI skills are growing, but not fast enough.
The risk to AI specialists
Being a specialist in an area suffering a skills gap has many advantages:
· Your scarcity provides leverage to negotiate a better compensation package
· You can leapfrog into a more senior role when tasked with building a function
· You define the role you step into, because there are often no senior peers
· Your market wide reputation grows faster because there are fewer people doing what you can
What’s less explored are the disadvantages and their impact on a career at the sharp end of rapidly developing tech like AI. What are those disadvantages?
Your progress can be held back
Although a rare specialism often brings a higher salary early on, your development might stall soon after. Having no peers or senior members to learn from can starve you of opportunities to learn. In this situation, frequent job hopping can be the only way to grow and learn, assuming you find an employer offering what you’re looking for.
Projects never close
When a skills gap signals immature companies experimenting with AI, there’s a risk you’ll spend years pushing pilot projects that never get adequate internal buy-in to be completed and shipped. The outcome is, you leave a role with little to show for it beyond a salary. Given AI’s rapid growth, two years without anything meaningful in your portfolio is both a wasted opportunity and damaging to your competitiveness.
Your scarcity window is closing
The UAE launched its AI Specialist Visa during September 2025 to attract international AI talent and close the skills gap outlined in this article. That means your rarity reduces each month. Although employers might be willing to employ candidates on potential today, that will change as the market matures. Now’s the time to secure proof of your value as an AI specialist (live projects, performance data) so you can compete with candidates arriving from other markets with their own portfolio of evidence.
How to manage the risk
The good news is that being a specialist in an area facing a skills gap is still a net gain. Managing the risk outlined above is about putting you in the best position going forward as the market evolves. We’ve created the grid below to help you.
Place yourself in the right quadrant based on your current role and the circumstances of the team and projects you’re working on. We’ve included steps you could consider taking to make the correct next move.

The final word
Being a rare expert in a rapidly growing field opens plenty of doors to great career opportunities. It also brings less obvious challenges to be aware of. As AI continues its rapid ascent, taking the time to reflect on what you’re learning and how much of that comes with verifiable proof can help set you up for a long and successful career.
